Here is how to make Soy candles
Have you ever wondered how to make your own homemade soy candles? Well if you answered yes, then you have come to the right place. I will be giving instructions on how to make container candles using Golden Brands wax 464.Here is a list of what you will need to make container candles:
Supplies
Soy wax (1lb; FYI 16oz=1lb)
pouring pot (stainless steel pot may also be used)
regular pot or deep pan (to use to make double broiler)
3 -6oz tin containers
3 wicks (ECO 10)
3 wick bars (helps to keep wicks straight)
1oz scented fragrance oil (I'll be using pomegranate cider)
Thermometer (candy thermometer works just fine)
Glue gun (or glue dots may be used instead)
warning labels (optional. If you are going to be selling your candles, then it is highly recommended)
Dye chip (color: purple)
Big spoon (or something to stir wax with)
Now that we have all of our ingredients, we are ready to make our candles. So we want to go ahead and put our oven on the warm setting (the lowest temperature setting).and put our tin candles in there for about 10 minutes.
While that's heating up, we want to prepare our double broiler by putting water in our pot or deep pan (about half filled) once it starts boiling, sit the pouring pot ( which will be filled with 1lb of wax) in to the boiling water. Stir frequently.
While the wax is melting. Take the containers out of the oven and wick them (should only take a minute or less) squeeze a little bit of hot glue onto the bottom of the wick and press onto the bottom of the container(make sure wick is in the middle) repeat steps for the two remaining containers, then set aside.
Go back to your melting wax and stir. If all of the wax is melted then it is probably a good time to place the thermometer in (make sure the thermometer is not touching the bottom of the pot as it could give an in accurate reading). When the wax reaches a temperature of about 170 (give or take 5 degrees, that's fine) pour in your fragrance. Stir in both directions about 20 times and then add your one dye chip and stir in both directions about 20 times. Make sure that all of the dye is melted, if not, keep stirring until completely melted.
Once melted, pour your wax into your containers only to the widest part of the container;(Do not fill in the smaller neck of the jar as this can cause the wax to cave or sink).
Now its time to put the wick bar in. Place the wick into the slit; be careful not to pull up to firmly. Make sure the wick is in the middle. Put the containers in an area that will allow the containers to remain untouched and cool completely.
Make sure not to place near any drafts or vents that are blowing directly on them. This normally takes a few hours.
Once it has completely solidified, remove the wick bar and trim the wick to 1/4 inch. Put on your lids and stick caution labels to the bottom. You have now made a homemade soy candle! Feel free to take a look at some of my other candles on http://www.o2scents.com
